George Roth

George Roth is a Principal Research Associate at the MIT Sloan School of Management. 

He is a thought leader and respected expert in organization learning and in helping set of of organizations manage enterprise changes.   George has taught, studied, consulted, and written about organizational leadership, culture, learning, and change for over twenty-five years.  His most recent work, published in 2105,  Systemic Change Management: The Five Capabilities for Improving Enterprises (Palgrave Macmillan), extends previous research on learning and change processes within organizations to enterprise-wide changes.  In enterprise change efforts, people go from making departmental or organizational improvements to optimizing the system of organizations that depend upon each other by developing and implementing parallel learning systems that not only achieve but also sustain high levels of individual and collective performance.   The approach and capabilities needed to enable enterprise improvements provide the basis of a new theory for systemically managing change.

In academic leadership roles, George has been Executive Director of the Ford-MIT Alliance – an alliance emphasizing knowledge creation activities in engineering research, education and environmental policy, and Research Director for the MIT Center for Organizational Learning – a consortium of companies applying systems thinking skills and developing organizational learning methods.  He is the past chair of the Organization Development and Change Division of the Academy of Management, a founding member of the Society for Organizational Learning, and on the faculty of The Academy for Systemic Change.  In addition to numerous articles, his co-authored books include: The Dance of Change: The Challenges to Sustain Momentum in Learning Organizations (Doubleday/Currency), To the Desert and Back: The Story of one of the Most Dramatic Business Transformations on Record (Jossey-Bass), Car Launch: Managing the Human Side of Change and Oil Change: Perspectives on Corporate Transformation (both Oxford University Press).

George's consulting focus is with leaders in organizations to improve individual skills and collective capabilities by implementing learning and change processes.  His expertise is in integrating leadership, strategy, organizational design, change and learning.  He cofounded Reflection Learning Associates, Inc.; a consulting firm specializing in helping individuals and organizations learn and change from their experience.  His clients have included Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Boeing, United Technologies Corporation, Shell Oil, BP, Valero Energy, British Telecom, Siemens, Accenture Consulting, US Department of Defense, and the World Bank. 

Roth holds a BS in mechanical engineering and an MBA. both from the University of New Hampshire. He holds a PhD in organization studies from the MIT Sloan School of Management
