Michael Coden

Michael Coden is a Research Affiliate at the MIT Sloan School of Management and is Associate Director, MIT Interdisciplinary Consortium for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.

Coden’s research interests include metricizing cybersecurity risks and actions in order to measure the costs, benefits, and return on investment of taking various actions to reduce or eliminate various cybersecurity risks.  It includes the use of system dynamics modeling, data analytics, and accident prevention theory to determine optimal strategies for cybersecuring a nation’s critical infrastructure.

Coden worked with the White House on development of the cybersecurity framework, and received a letter of appreciation for his leadership.  He is a contributor to and Editor of the ISA/IEC-62443 Cybersecurity Standard, has been published extensively, has spoken at major conferences around the world, and has 16 patents in fiber optic device design, secure network technologies, and secure data protocols.  Coden also serves as vice president of NextNine Inc., a leading cybersecurity software company.

He received a BSEE from MIT in 1967, an MS in Business Administration from Columbia University (1975), and a MS in applied mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University (1979).  Coden is also an (ISC)2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
