Biography

Bala Dharan
Bala Dharan is J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Accounting Emeritus at Rice University and Vice President at Charles River Associates. He has published widely in major accounting and finance journals, and is a co-author of four books covering financial accounting and finance topics. He has been invited three times by the United States Congress to testify on accounting and disclosure issues. His current research focuses on the effect of derivatives and structured finance transactions on financial statement and solvency analysis, and the effect of financial statement complexity on the valuation of securities. He has extensive litigation and business consulting experience in financial accounting and disclosures issues, analysis of complex transactions, and damages and valuation analysis. Bala has been a visiting professor of accounting at the Harvard Business School and at University of California, Berkeley, and is currently a visiting professor of accounting at the Harvard Law School. He has a B.Tech in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and MS and Ph.D. in accounting from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He is a CPA and holds the ABV (Accredited in Business Valuation) and CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics) credentials.
