Practice of Finance: Alternative Investments-Private Equity

Description: The course is a general introduction to the field of alternative investments principally covering private equity and hedge funds. The field is placed in the context of the larger investment universe. Various sub-fields such as venture capital, leveraged buyouts, distressed investing, and the spectrum of hedge funds are summarized. The structure and operation of alternative funds, valuation and common topics such as deal sourcing, exits, value added, and alpha strategies are discussed. The evolution of the field is discussed as well as a view towards what the future may bring. Finally, investors' perspectives and portfolio construction and risk management with alternatives are addressed. Student participation is encouraged, there is a project and a reading list.
