Practice of Finance: Foundations of Institutional Portfolio Management

Subject: Finance

Description: Covers the management of active investment portfolios, with emphasis on the design and development of the investment process. Taught from the perspective of the active investment management firm or hedge fund managing portfolios for the institutional investment community. Goal of course is to familiarize students with the basic elements of product design, security selection and active management, risk management, and review and control. Emphasis on stock portfolios, though most concepts applicable to all marketable securities. Elemental theory is presented when needed, but emphasis is on practical uses backed by references. Discussion of leverage use and its impact on current market dynamics. A major part of the course is a class project in which teams of 3-5 students design and develop a product of the students’ choice.
