Alumni Career Outreach in New York City

NYC Alumni OutreachAt a special two-day alumni career program in New York City, alumni from all points in their careers met for one-on-one consultations with seasoned career advisors.

On December 8 and 9, 2008 the School hosted a special two-day alumni career program for MIT Sloan graduates in the New York tri-state area. This event featured one-on-one consultations with professional career development staff and opportunities to network with MIT Sloan alumni. In addition, MIT Sloan William Porter Distinguished Lecturer Howard Anderson offered, “How to Get a Great Job in a Tough Economy,” with strategies and insights on a successful job search in our current economic climate.

Dean David Schmittlein also attended. In his remarks, he underscored the distinctive characteristics that identify MIT Sloan graduates as leaders who will make a difference in the business world, especially during these difficult times:

  • MIT Sloan alumni are extraordinarily well-trained in concepts and methods that are valuable now and will stand the test of time. This knowledge promotes the courage of well founded convictions, a coveted trait in uncertain time.
  • Employers are looking for people whose knowledge is not limited to silos, people whose sense of business goes well beyond a little finance, a little marketing, a little accounting, to an understanding of the complex systems that characterize businesses and markets. These individuals are the ones who possess the insights necessary to effect big changes in business models.
  • The future belongs to those who embrace innovation — innovation in business processes that enhance efficiency and cost-saving strategies, and innovation that leads to new, ‘must-have’ products and services. This is the most effective path through difficult times.

Over the course of the program, alumni from all points in their careers met for one-on-one consultations with seasoned career advisors. Current executives were able to hone their skills and better understand the job market. Job seekers came to appreciate the power of individual attention, discussing core issues of their situations, starting with their objectives and, once having established strategy, focusing on job search tactics, most notably networking.

The workshop also highlighted ways for alumni to take advantage of MIT Sloan's career resources. Attendees were encouraged to:

  • update their contact information on the Alumni Directory — keeping your information current allows you to be accessible and visible to other alumni;
  • seek Career Coaching though MIT Sloan's Alumni Career Resources — these individual conversations are strictly confidential;
  • participate in the Alumni Job Board — employers post here to look specifically for MIT Sloan alumni; and
  • include your information in the Alumni Resume database, a source of professional documents for both large employers and recruiters.
