The London Business School Club of New York MasterWorks Series presents
An Evening with Dan Bane, Chairman and CEO of Trader Joe's
Wednesday, April 11, 2007, New York City
Presented by The London Business School Club of New York
6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Reception
7:30 - 8:30 p.m., Dan Bane's talk followed by Q&A
One year ago, Trader Joe's opened up its first store in New York City. In a town where there is no shortage of food shops selling fresh, interesting and different products and prepared meals, is it a surprise that, on a recent Saturday afternoon, the check-out line snaked all the way through the store as New Yorkers waited patiently and politely for 45 minutes or more? Or, that one Upper East Sider passes at least four French bakeries on a weekly mission to 14th Street to buy seven Trader Joe's baguettes?
Join the London Business School Club of New York as Trader Joe's chief crew member, Dan Bane, talks to us about the Trader Joe's story.About Trader Joe's : Founded in 1958 by Joe Coulombe in Pasadena, CA as the “Pronto Market”, the company switched its identity to “Trader Joe's” in 1966 to differentiate itself from its main competition - the local 7-Eleven store. Joe noticed that Americans had started to travel more and frequently returned home with tastes for food and drink developed on their trips but frustrated because they couldn't find them in their neighborhood stores.
About Trader Joe's
Today, Trader Joe's has 274 stores in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Between 1990 and 2001, the chain quintupled its store count while increasing its profit ten-fold (source: Business Week, April 26, 2004). Supermarket News estimates that Trader Joe's total sales for 2006 was $5.0 billion, which gave it a ranking of Number 27 on the list of “2007 Top 75 North American Food Retailers”. The October 2006 issue of Consumer Reports ranked Trader Joe's the second-best supermarket chain in the nation, after Wegmans. The company is privately owned, by a family trust set up by German investor, Theo Albrecht, one of the two brothers behind Aldi.
Trader Joe's describes itself as “your unique grocery store”, and sells many items from several of its own private labels, including Trader Jose's , Trader Ming's , Baker Josef, Trader Giotto, and Trader Joe-San, along with Charles Shaw wine, popularly known as “Two Buck Chuck”. Employees are referred to as “crew members” and positions within the store have references to merchant and naval seagoing ranks - the store manager is the “Captain” while the assistant manager is the “First Mate”. All employees wear Hawaiian shirts, from the shelf stocker to the chief executive. As the New York Times says, “All this has helped build Trader Joe's into a full-scale food cult.”
About Dan Bane
Dan Bane says he has “the best job in America”. He came to Trader Joe's in 2001, as the president of Trader Joe's West, and later that year was appointed CEO. Throughout his career, he has worked for various accounting firms in southern California, specializing his practice on the retail industry and law firms. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Accounting. Throughout the year, Dan Bane visits each of the Trader Joe's stores three to four times a year, where he will bag groceries, greet customers or talk to customers about what they like or don't like that day in Trader Joe's .
