A Special Note to Our Alumni Community
from Dean David Schmittlein

As the world confronts the enormous challenges of the ongoing financial crisis, MIT Sloan contributes by implementing innovative teaching methods, forging meaningful relationships, and launching research initiatives in an effort to make sense of this evolving situation and communicate solutions.

The School recently launched MIT Sloan Teaching Innovation Resources (MSTIR), a collection of teaching materials including case studies, simulations, deep dives, and industry, business, and country overviews. The collection covers a wide array of companies and organizations, industries, and geographies, but it focuses on areas such as sustainability, industry evolution, and global entrepreneurship. These resources are open to all so please visit the MSTIR Web site and listen to Professor John Sterman's Webcast to learn more about its offerings.

I encourage you to stay connected to MIT Sloan by visiting the MIT Sloan newsroom page and listening to what our distinguished faculty has to share. Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship Simon Johnson has a particularly insightful blog (baselinescenario.com) that explains the nature and cause of the current situation.

Continuing MIT Sloan's legacy of excellence in finance through teaching and groundbreaking research, Bank of America and the MIT Sloan School of Management's Laboratory for Financial Engineering (LFE) are collaborating to utilize cutting-edge financial analysis to drive innovation in financial services. The LFE will support multiple quantitative research efforts that cover a diverse set of opportunities around computational finance, quantitative analytics, and risk-reward tradeoffs. Harris & Harris Group Professor of Finance Andrew Lo, a leading figure in financial theory and practice, will be the director of this research agenda.

The School also continues to reach out to the vibrant and supportive community of MIT Sloan's friends and alumni, including those alumni whose careers are being affected by recent economic events. We are enhancing our portfolio of alumni career services and resources, including networking programs, peer advice, and experience-based guidance. In December the School hosted a regional career event for MIT Sloan alumni in the New York tri-state area. A similar event is being planned for Boston-area alumni in the spring. Please visit the MIT Sloan Alumni Career Resources Web page to learn more about these events and how you can make the most of your connection to MIT Sloan.

The opportunity to share ideas, experience, and energy with faculty and classmates is invaluable. To ensure that our community is the strongest it can be, I encourage you to update your contact information in the alumni directory. Doing so increases your accessibility and visibility to fellow alumni, other members of the MIT Sloan community and the larger MIT network, and enables us to keep you informed about upcoming initiatives in the timeliest way possible.

Thank you for your on-going support of MIT Sloan. Our successes are mutual, and we hope that you will continue to see your connection to the School as a valuable resource as we manage through these uncertain times together

With warmest regards, David Schmittlein
