  • New York Finance Reception: Perspectives on the World’s Largest Financial Institution and the new MIT Center for Finance and Policy

Nearly 100 alumni and guests gathered in New York City on May 22, 2013 at the ‘21’ Club for an event featuring Dean David Schmittlein and Professor Deborah J. Lucas. The Dean shared with guests an update from the School detailing how MIT Sloan is expanding its offerings, improving its physical campus, enhancing its global reach, and launching new initiatives. Distinguished Professor of Finance and former Chief Economist for the Congressional Budget Office, Deborah J. Lucas then provided a thought-provoking illustration of the extent to which the government itself is a financial institution that lacks a sophisticated understanding of sound financial practices, and how these conditions more boldly illustrate the need for research and education in finance than the risk and capital effect of the government’s financial activities. She went on further to share how MIT Sloan’s new Center for Finance and Policy initiative is designed specifically to address the critical need for knowledge at the intersection of finance and policy. Conversation was lively and the energy was palpable.
