Application Checklist

All applicants to the MIT Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership must submit the following:

Online Application

Resume in standard business format covering education and work experience. (Please be specific about dates.)

Two letters of recommendation, sent directly to the Admissions Committee. The reference letters that will be most helpful to you are those that address the topics listed below and point to actual observations of your actions.

  • How long and in what capacity the recommender has known you.
  • How you stand out from others in a similar capacity.
  • An example of your impact on a person, group, or organization.
  • A representative example of how you interact with other people.
  • An area(s) where you have potential room for growth professionally.
  • If you are a company-sponsored applicant, the recommendations should come from your supervisors/superiors and should indicate how you were nominated for the MIT Sloan Fellows Program and what plan exists for increased/different responsibilities after your return to the organization.

The recommendation letters can be submitted electronically, using our on-line recommendation system, or by mail. More information on the recommendation letters can be found in the on-line application.

Funding letter
  • Organization-sponsored applicants must submit a letter from a principal executive in your sponsoring organization indicating willingness to provide a leave of absence and appropriate financial support.
  • Applicants who are entrepreneurs and/or self-funded must include a separate statement indicating how you will fund your year at MIT.

Official transcripts, in English, of your record at the undergraduate and graduate institutions from which you received your degree(s) or performed any graduate work. (This does not include short courses or certificate programs.) Do not mail in your official academic records or transcripts. Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide an official transcript from each school attended.

Candidates whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English. MIT requires all such applicants to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

TOEFL: Scores must be sent directly to the Program Office by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The TOEFL code for the Sloan Fellows Program is 3536. Only scores taken after Jan. 1, 2004, will be accepted. We expect a TOEFL score of 100 or better (internet) or 250 or better (computer). Contact ETS at +1-609-921-9000 or http://www.ets.org/toefl/.

IELTS: IELTS exam measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication. Only scores taken after January 1, 2004 will be accepted. We expect an IELTS score of 7.5 or better. To register for a test, visit http://www.ielts.org.

We do not require scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) because we consider many attributes for admission, including leadership potential, past accomplishments, and contribution to the MIT Sloan Fellows learning community. As a globally-oriented program, we also believe there may be a cultural bias to the GMAT. However, the MIT Sloan Fellows Program is a rigorous academic pursuit and we are very interested in knowing your ability to succeed in this environment. We recommend that candidates take the GMAT if they believe their academic records do not accurately reflect their current knowledge of quantitative methods and mastery of English language comprehension, or if their records are more than 15 years old. If candidates do elect to take the GMAT, we expect a score of 650 or better. Scores must be sent directly to the Program Office by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GMAT code for the Sloan Fellows Program is X5X-QS-73. Only scores taken after Jan. 1, 2004, will be accepted. To register for the GMAT visit http://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT/.

Application fee
The fee for applying to the MIT Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership is $250, payable by credit card online when you apply. You will be prompted for payment information after pressing the “Submit Application” button. If you wish to pay by means other than a credit card, you must send an email to fellows@sloan.mit.edu at least one week before you intend to submit your online application. We are only able to waive the application fee for active members of the US Armed Forces. Those who qualify should email Marc O'Mansky at moman@mit.edu prior to submitting your application.

Campus Visit
After the program office has read your resume and spoken to you about your suitability for the program, all qualified candidates are strongly encouraged to visit the MIT Sloan campus during the period September - November 2009 to familiarize themselves with the School, attend classes, speak with current members of the class, and to meet with a member of the program staff.

Interview
Interviews are by invitation only. Our goal is to interview all candidates accepted into the program. An invitation to interview thus signals that your application has reached an advanced stage of consideration, but does not guarantee admission. Applicants invited to interview will be required to provide an official transcript, in a sealed envelope, from each school attended. Invitations to interview will be sent via e-mail.
