A legacy of invention
As the preeminent university on the high-tech frontier, MIT has been instrumental in some of contemporary society's key innovations. The Institute launched
the computer revolution by making digital computation fast and practical for everyday use. It made space flight possible with inertial guidance systems.
It even sent the very first message through space by television—"MIT."
This legacy of invention is palpable across the campus, in part because at MIT ideamaking is as much a sport and a pastime as it is a profession. The instinct for invention and reinvention is imbedded within the culture to such an extent that nothing is taken for granted, and everything is approached from a fresh perspective. That includes the practice of management. Over the last half-century, MIT Sloan has engineered innovations that have changed the face of business. System dynamics, marketing science, and McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y are just a few examples.
The vast breadth of MIT innovation is apparent in the range of Nobel Prizes awarded to members of the MIT community. The 72 MIT-related Nobel Laureates span nearly all the prize categories, from physics to economics to peace. The prevalence of Nobel Prize winners also illustrates that MIT is an institution every bit as devoted to building leaders as to building inventions. MIT alumni have founded many major international corporations, among them Eastman Kodak, Hewlett-Packard, Raytheon, McDonnell Douglas, Texas Instruments, Digital, Intel, Bose, Polaroid, Campbell Soup, Gillette, and Teradyne.
