Turning ideas into companies
Few environments on earth host an entrepreneurial ecosystem as rich and organic as MIT's. Perhaps because of the Institute's location at the intersection of technology and business. Perhaps because the culture of MIT has always been about cultivating new ideas. Perhaps because its robust interdisciplinary climate stimulates collaboration among adventurous thinkers across all disciplines.
An independent study once noted that if the thousands of companies founded by MIT alumni and faculty formed an independent nation, that country would hold the 24th-largest economy in the world. MIT's entrepreneurial scene began with the birth of the Institute well over a century ago and has played an instrumental role in the development of many of the great advances of the last several generations—and that includes advances in management, finance, and economics.
Entrepreneurship at MIT is about launching new ideas and managing them for optimal change. Whether they are career employees in multinational corporations, high-ranking officials in government organizations, or entrepreneurs planning a start-up, MIT Sloan Fellows find extraordinary enrichment in this invigorating environment.
The MIT $100K
One of the icons of the entrepreneurship movement is MIT's premier business plan competition — the MIT $100K, the first such competition in the world. As the world leader among entrepreneurship competitions, the $100K has launched more than 85 companies with aggregate exit values of $2.5 billion and a market cap of more than $10 billion. These companies have generated more than 2,500 jobs and attracted $600 million dollars in venture capital funding. With deep experience and a magnetic attraction to revolutionary ideas, MIT Sloan Fellows are often members of the top teams.
