Fellows enrolled in the flex option complete the program on roughly a half-time basis over two calendar years, beginning in late May or early June. The flex option is intended for fellows working and living within a one-hour commute of MIT.
The first year of the flex option begins with the 12-week, full-time summer portion of the program, consisting entirely of core courses, team building and leadership activities, and social experiences with the full-time fellows. During the fall and spring terms, flex fellows complete core courses with the full-time fellows. Beginning in the spring term, as the number of core courses diminishes, they also select two to three elective courses.
Although the next summer is free of academics, second-year flex fellows participate in social and cultural events with the incoming class of fellows, their new cohort. Beginning in the fall of their second year, flex fellows fulfill their remaining elective requirements. On average, they can expect to be on campus the equivalent of two full days or three half days during business hours and spend a comparable amount of time on course preparation and program-related activities during evenings and weekends.
This format has proven highly successful in providing fellows with the flexibility they need to incorporate the learning experience into personal, professional, and organizational goals. And with one foot in the learning environment and one foot in the workplace, participants bring valuable day-to-day job experiences to bear on class discussions and team projects.
