To maintain our position in the premier rank of business schools worldwide, we at MIT Sloan must be ready to seize opportunities, respond to crises, invest in new ideas, technologies, and avenues, and rise to challenges we cannot yet imagine or define. The flexibility of gifts to the MIT Sloan Annual Fund makes it possible for the dean to use this revenue to achieve all these important objectives. Tuition covers 60 percent of the School's annual costs and MIT Sloan Annual Fund gifts help us to bridge the gap. The MIT Sloan Annual Fund provides a critical base of support that has an impact upon all members of our community-students, faculty, and alumni.
These are among the innovative new programs made possible by annual contributions from alumni and friends:
In the fall of 2002, we launched a new MBA curriculum that brings late-breaking research directly into the classroom; offers a holistic, less “siloed” approach to problem-solving; puts more emphasis on leadership development and experiential learning; and sustains MIT Sloan's long commitment to rigor. One highlight is the new "6-1-6" system, in which we lift students out of their regular classroom routine for one week mid-semester and plunge them into a range of intense experiences-from hands-on visits to local businesses, to small seminars where faculty share the experience and results of raw, ongoing research-to deepen their understanding. The ultimate goal of the new curriculum is to prepare students for the tough, complicated, cross-disciplinary challenges that confront business leaders today.
Five years ago, as the world struggled to adjust to the post-dot-com-economy, we realized that circumstances were pushing many MIT Sloan alumni into difficult career transitions, and that the School could do much more to help. Through a targeted investment of time and resources, we tripled the number of career counseling hours we provided and instituted the Brass Ring, a service designed to connect MIT Sloan graduates with net-based career services and information.
We continually strive to ensure that MIT Sloan students and faculty reflect the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of the real world of work. Each year, we devote funds to outreach and recruiting efforts for students and faculty from diverse backgrounds. Through the Diversity Fellowship Program, the School also makes a critical investment in keeping the doors of MIT Sloan open to deserving students regardless of financial means.
Alumni can have a tremendous positive impact on MIT Sloan by participating in annual Reunion Class Gift campaigns. With critical help from class committees made up of dedicated alumni volunteers, classmates work together to increase their support of MIT Sloan, both in terms of overall revenue and participation in giving. Learn more about our current reunion class gift campaigns.
Each year, graduating students rally in support of a student class gift. Last year's student gift reached new heights with $200,000 raised in support of MIT Sloan from 84 percent of the class.
Every contribution helps sustain MIT Sloan's excellence in management education and research. In recognition of these contributions, we have established the following donor categories. Qualification for these categories is based on a combination of personal and corporate matching gifts.
| MIT Sloan Dean’s Circle | |
|---|---|
| Leaders | $100,000 and above |
| Founders | $25,000 to $99,999 |
| Directors | $10,000 to $24,999 |
| Partners | $5,000 to $9,999 |
| Investors | $2,500 to $4,999 |
| Shareholders* | $1,000 to $2,499 |
* $500 donors from the five most recent graduating classes
The MIT Sloan Annual Report lists all donors who qualify for membership in these categories.
Since the MIT Sloan School of Management is an integral part of MIT, the MIT Sloan Annual Fund is a critical component of the larger MIT Alumni/ae Fund. Therefore, all contributors to MIT Sloan funds are recognized as members of MIT donor recognition societies and receive all associated benefits.
Special gifts (or major gifts) of $100,000 or more support those priorities that are essential to achieving MIT Sloan's mission:
