MIT Sloan/Harvard Kennedy School Dual Degree Option

The MIT Sloan MBA Program and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (HKS) offer a dual degree program which can be completed in three years:

  • one year in residence at one school
  • a second year in residence at the second school
  • a third year with one semester at each school

Candidates admitted to the dual-degree program must present a compelling rationale for pursuing the combined program.

It is also possible that if you apply to both programs you may not be admitted to the dual degree program but will have the option to complete the two degrees in four years.

Concurrent Applicants

If you apply to MIT Sloan and the Harvard Kennedy School in the same cycle and wish to be considered for the dual degree option, you must:

  1. Self-identify to both schools as a dual degree applicant on your applications; and
  2. Notify MIT Sloan if you are accepted into HKS.

The MIT Sloan School will review your application to determine whether you will be accepted to the dual degree option. If you are accepted into the dual degree option, MIT Sloan recommends that you begin your studies at MIT Sloan the first year since that scenario allows more flexibility for the completion of the MBA degree requirements.

HKS Starters

If you are enrolled at the Harvard Kennedy School, you may apply online to the MIT Sloan MBA program for the dual degree option. If you are admitted by MIT Sloan, you will be notified at the time of admission whether you are accepted to the dual degree option. It is possible that you can be admitted to the full-time, two-year MBA program and not the three year dual degree option.

MIT Sloan Starters

If you apply and are accepted to the MBA Program, and subsequently decide to apply for the dual degree option, you must apply to HKS at the end of your first semester at MIT Sloan. You will submit a copy of the HKS application and a supplementary essay to MIT Sloan. For those admitted by HKS, MIT Sloan will notify you whether you have been accepted to the dual degree option.
