An eye toward social entrepreneurship

When I decided to come to MIT Sloan I was a senior at Dartmouth. I applied because I knew the School had a strong social entrepreneurship program and that is something I want to pursue. I have always been interested in solving social problems.

During the summer before my senior year I travelled back to Nigeria for the first time since I was six and it was the first time I witnessed people who had less than what I felt to be necessary. They had no running water, and even college graduates were unable to get jobs. Ever since I have wanted to help find solutions to these kinds of social problems.

At Dartmouth I was involved with a program called StartingBloc, where they “pass you the torch” as a social entrepreneur. If you have an idea they encourage you to run with it -- make it into reality. This led me to spend two years teaching math to high school students in Brooklyn, New York for the Teach For America program. Having lived in Brooklyn when my family first immigrated, I felt that educational disparity in this country was a problem I knew something about, and teaching was a great way for me to affect change.

Making a difference

What I really enjoyed about teaching was working one-on-one with students – which I still do — and I think that I might like to start a program where I am able to tutor inner city children. However, I also like working with numbers so I want to go into the financial field and see what I am able to do there. I want to see where that leads me and I am hoping I will be able to use that in someway to give to programs I am interested in.

I don't know exactly where I want to go. Nothing is set in stone, but I think an MBA from MIT Sloan is definitely going to set me out on the right path. I am excited to see what the School has to offer and what I have to offer it as well.
