3 from MIT Sloan named to top women-led businesses in Massachusetts list

Three companies with MIT Sloan alumnae at the helm were named to the Boston Globe Magazine’s “2017 top 100 women-led businesses in Massachusetts” list.

The number of women-run businesses in the U.S. is small. In 2016, the number of Fortune 500 companies with women at the helm was only 21. This year, that number rose to 32.

At the same time, among Fortune 1000 companies, those with women CEOs between 2002 and 2014 produced equity returns 226 percent better than the S&P 500.

The Boston Globe Magazine partners with The Commonwealth Institute, a nonprofit devoted to advancing women as business leaders, to compile the annual list of the top organizations led by women in Massachusetts. This year’s list included organizations like Harvard University, Care.com (co-founded by MIT Sloan alumna Donna Levin), and Fidelity Investments.

Here are the businesses on this year’s list led by MIT Sloan graduates:

Analysis Group
Analysis Group is an economic consulting firm based in Boston. The company is led by CEO and chairman Martha S. Samuelson, who earned a master’s degree of science in management from MIT Sloan in 1986. Samuelson joined Analysis Group in 1992.

Axcelis Technologies
Axcelis Technologies provides equipment and services to semiconductor manufacturing businesses. The company, based in Beverly, Mass., is helmed by president and CEO Mary G. Puma, who earned a master’s degree of science in management from MIT Sloan in 1981. Puma joined Eaton Corporation in 1998 — Axcelis spun out from Eaton in 2000.

Pixability
Pixability provides marketers focused on video advertising performance and audience insights and targeting technology. The company, based in Boston, was founded by current CEO Bettina Hein, who earned a master’s degree of science in management from MIT Sloan in 2007.
