MIT Sloan’s Karplus, Zhu named to 40 Under 40 best business school professors list

By

MIT Sloan assistant professors Valerie Karplus and Haoxiang Zhu were named today to the Poets & Quants 40 Under 40 list of best business school professors.

Karplus’ recent research focuses on energy and climate change policy in China. She told Poets & Quants she wanted to be a business school professor “when I discovered I could apply my diverse interests in the management of technology and innovation, the natural sciences and engineering, and global affairs and policy to advance solutions to major challenges facing society — a hallmark of scholarship at MIT.”

In December, Karplus wrote in The Conversation that universities and nongovernmental organizations have a crucial role to play in the review of pledges from the Paris climate talks.

Karplus has been at MIT since 2006, earning master’s degrees in technology and policy and civil and environmental engineering, followed by a doctorate in engineering systems. Her classes include Entrepreneurship without Borders and New Models for Global Business.

Zhu, who joined MIT Sloan in 2012, studies asset pricing and financial market structure and design. In February, he wrote in MarketWatch about how asset managers can use randomness to combat competition from high-frequency trading firms. In 2013, he published a study examining how dark pools — private exchanges for equity trading — impact price discovery [PDF]. He told Poets & Quants he enjoys doing work that “has an impact on finance practice or policy.”

Zhu teaches Managerial Finance. Read Poets & Quants’ full profile of Zhu.

Last year, Associate Professor Cynthia Rudin was named to the Poets & Quants list.
