Meet Sloanie Tim. He hadn’t been seen for a while, but then last month he showed up at a photoshoot with MIT Sloan’s Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee.
Since then, Tim has been hanging around MIT Sloan and the Office of External Relations. He is a close relative—and somewhat confusingly shares a name with—MIT’s mascot, Tim the Beaver.

Tim’s first known appearance at MIT Sloan was in 1964 on this sticker and on a set of sweatshirts. He was designed by Dave Raney, SM ’65, and was known back then as the “executive beaver.” He has long quit smoking, but is known to still don his top hat on occasion.
But these days Tim will sometimes throw on a hoodie, and pull an all-nighter studying.
A few things to know about Tim:
- He has a Tumblr.
- He has a Twitter hashtag: See what he’s up to and report any sightings with #SloanieTim. While you’re at it, follow @MITSloanAlumni and @MITSloan for news from campus and from alumni gatherings around the world.
- He travels a lot, and would love to meet you at upcoming alumni events.
- He likes the limelight. Seems unnatural for a nocturnal animal, but if you see Sloanie Tim, he will want to take a picture with you.
So keep an eye out for Tim in the coming months. He is certain to appear frequently in 2014 as MIT Sloan celebrates 100 years of management education at MIT.
