The goal of MIT Sloan's PhD Program is to select a small number of people who are most likely to successfully complete our rigorous and demanding program — and ultimately achieve a PhD. The admission selection process is highly competitive; only 15-20 students are admitted from a pool of several hundred applicants.
The faculty admissions team looks for excellent academic records that include strong backgrounds in one or more of the basic disciplines (economics, behavioral science, statistics, and applied mathematics) and previous work in disciplines related to the intended area of concentration. They also give weight to test scores, letters of recommendation, and to the applicants' own written descriptions of their backgrounds, interests, and career goals.
Research at MIT Sloan is often an interdisciplinary exercise, as management researchers collaborate with MIT's eminent researchers in science and technology.
