IAP Adventures in 2017!

For 40+ years, IAP (Independent Activities Period) has provided MIT students, faculty, and alums with a unique opportunity to participate in how-to sessions, forums, athletic endeavors, lecture series, films, tours, recitals and contests. While many of my classmates took advantage of the traditional IAP experience or spent their break recruiting for consulting and banking jobs, I took it as my chance to travel to Manila, Hong Kong, and Breckenridge, Colorado to reconnect with the family and friends!

As a Filipino-American, I try to make it back to Manila every few years, so the six weeks away from Sloan offered me a chance to reconnect with my family in the Philippines. During my time there, I quickly realized just how incredibly welcoming Sloanies are! While in the Philippines, I planned a last-minute trip to the island of Boracay with four 2nd Year Sloanies (who I barely knew) who were in country for G-Lab. We spent our days island hopping and drinking mango shakes, while our nights were filled with amazing sunsets and dinners! I’m so happy to say that I made four great friends who I am excited to hang out with back in Cambridge! A few days after returning from the beach, the five of us hosted a Sloan Info Session for prospective students and also had a wonderful dinner with 10+ Sloan Alum and a 2019 AdMIT, Pauline Coherco. It was amazing hearing from alumni about how Sloan has changed over the years, but how they each still count their classmates as some of their closest friends!

After three weeks in Manila, I spent a week in Hong Kong reconnecting with old friends and exploring a city I used to call home! A majority of my time in HK was spent exploring the new restaurants and bars in Wan Chai, TST, and Soho.

After returning to Boston for a few days, I flew to Breckenridge, Colorado with 240 Sloanies to ski, but more importantly, apres ski! It was great to meet new classmates and reconnect with friends I had not seen since the end of our first semester.

If I had to do IAP all over again, I’d only change one thing…I would bring a few Sloanies along!
