Under the umbrella of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, a number of on-campus sustainability activities are planned, including the monthly MIT Sloan Sustainability Speaker Series, Sustainability@Sloan community meetings, and various workshops and seminars with companies, nonprofits, and government institutions.
To date, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Speaker Series has brought more than 20 distinguished experts to MIT to address topics associated with sustainability, including poverty alleviation, public health, global climate change, environmental toxicity, new product development for sustainability, and sustainability-related investment strategies. Past events include a symposium with the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) that showcased sustainability-related research and related activities within MIT Sloan and across MIT; participation with the Alliance for Global Sustainability for their biannual conference, which brought together leaders in industry, government, and civil society to discuss the need for substantive action in both developed and developing regions of the world; the MIT Sloan Fellows Convocation on Strategies for Sustainable Business; and the MIT Sustainability Summit, coordinated by the MIT student group Sustainability@MIT.
“We recommended specific projects to go after and that was the original scope of our project. [For example,] ‘We want to reduce carbon, and we want to do it in the most financially responsible way. What do we do? What is the best investment for MIT to make right now?’”
