  • Declaring an MIT Sloan Major or Minor

Students may enroll in any one (but only one) of our three programs.

Declaring a Major in Management Science

Undergraduates are admitted to MIT without designation of a major and students may declare a major at the end of their freshman year. The First Year site contains information about exploring and choosing a major.

Students who wish to switch from one major to another  may do so using a Change of Major form. Information about this process can be found on the Registrar's Office site.

Students who wish to add Course 15 as a second major must apply to do so with the Committee on Curricula (CoC). As part of the application process, the CoC requires both departments to review and sign the student's form.  Our office will need to receive the following materials from you:

    • a CoC petition form endorsed by you and your primary department, and
    • a copy of your unofficial transcript, which you can obtain free of charge at the Student Services Center (Room 11-120).

We will contact you after our office reviews your petition. You will need to bring the petition to the CoC (Room 5-111) for committee review. After your petition is approved by the CoC, you will have successfully declared a double major. You will then receive Sloan student priority for bidding on Sloan classes.

Declaring a Minor in Management or Management Science

The process for declaring either the Minor in Management or the Minor in Management Science is the same (and uses the same form). Students may not declare a minor until they have first declared a major at MIT. You must declare a minor no later than Add Date one term prior to the term in which you expect to receive the SB degree.

To declare a Sloan minor, bring a Minor Application form to the Office of Undergraduate Education (Room E48-541) along with an unofficial transcript, which you can obtain free of charge at the Student Services Center (Room 11-120). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Once your application has been processed, you will receive Sloan student priority for bidding.

    Completing a Sloan minor

In order to be awarded either minor, you must file a Minor Completion form by the end of the third week of the term in which you plan to graduate, even if you are taking subjects in your final term to complete the minor. Bring this form, along with a current copy of your unofficial transcript, to the Office of Undergraduate Education.
