Learning from others

I approached my undergraduate education with a desire to build on the quantitative and qualitative skills I had previously acquired, and dual degrees in management science and mathematics fit the bill. MIT Sloan is famous for its innovative take on the business curriculum. After taking a few introductory courses at MIT Sloan, I realized I not only had much to learn from the professors, but also from the other students. This crystallized my decision to attend MIT Sloan.

MIT Sloan showed me in many ways how basic attributes like quick thinking, motivation, and curiosity could mesh with finance. Participating in the SUMA mentoring program and chatting with experienced MBA students helped me to better understand which positions in finance would be best for me.

Career-wise, I really enjoy how much my firm and my group invest in junior people. For example, we are encouraged to ask senior staff members to coffee to gain insight into what we do. As a result, I am more aware of available options that enable me to be flexible in my career path.

A special common bond

I’ve had so many positive and enriching experiences at MIT Sloan. One of the highlights was getting to know Professor Leigh Hafrey, my advisor. Every time we met, he would first spend time on the task at hand — next semester’s courseload, for example. Then, he would surprise me by asking something unexpected that would keep me thinking big picture. I remember one conversation we had when I was talking about graduation and how much I was looking forward to being free from homework. Leigh redirected the conversation to my long-term goals and asked whether teaching could be one of them. I had previously considered teaching but hearing the reasons again from someone both experienced and trusted was invaluable.

The MIT Sloan network has been very beneficial. Once I relocated to New York, it enabled me to meet fellow MIT Sloan graduates who are living or visiting here. The network also allowed me to learn about job experiences in other firms and industries, and I connected with alumni who are more senior in my firm. The MIT Sloan experience is unique, so we share a special common bond that makes it easier to build relationships.
