MIT Sloan is a very supportive environment for women. In addition to the various club and recruiting events that are available to all MIT Sloan students, there are many events that are exclusively for women (either sponsored by MIT Sloan or by SWIM — Sloan Women in Management). These events allow you to get to know your female classmates better and to network with female alumni or businesspeople in the Boston area.
Within the classrooms and teams, we were all treated as equals. I had no negative experiences from being a woman in the classroom or in my teams. Everyone was very respectful and understood that each person brings a unique and important perspective to any discussion or project.
On a personal level, all of my female friends at MIT Sloan were at different stages in their lives — some were single, in serious relationships, got engaged, got married, already had children, or had a baby while at MIT Sloan — and everyone was able to balance their classes and activities with their personal lives. MIT Sloan is very flexible and you are able to have personal time in addition to your new MIT Sloan lifestyle!!
One of the highlights of my time at MIT Sloan was our Spring Trip to Japan and Korea. It was my first trip to Asia, and it was an eye-opening experience to see how business is conducted there, to meet high-level executives in various industries, and to get to know my classmates so well. I learned so much about the countries, industries, and culture that I could not have learned in the classroom.
We also learned first-hand that MIT Sloan has a very strong reputation in the business community, especially internationally. When we were in Japan and Korea, we were treated with great respect and admiration when we mentioned that we were students at MIT Sloan. I worked in New Zealand in January 2004 for my MIT Sloan Global Entrepreneurship Lab course, and the MIT Sloan name was very well received in that country as well. The MIT Sloan brand name will give you instant credibility wherever you go!
