The academic flexibility that MIT and Sloan offered was incredible. I learned how to take responsibility for my education and myself. One of the courses that I thought of as silly at the time has turned out to be one of the most important things I learned! It was about the psychology of managing. I have also particularly benefited from my association with several current and former professors.
In 1983, Citibank looked at me and said, “You don't know anything about trading, but you went to MIT; maybe you can figure out the new options on bonds that just started trading in Chicago.” That led to starting the caps and collars business, which lead to running the derivatives business, which lead to starting my own consulting firm in 1991. Because of my MIT Sloan background, people look at me and see a woman with a credible, quant background, and that has really opened a lot of doors for me.
