This case explores Adrian Fenty’s reflections on his four-year term as mayor of Washington, DC, nine months after losing the mayoral democratic primary. He remained committed to his management principles even though they likely contributed to his loss and, by extension, the departure of Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Deputy Mayor for Education Victor Reinoso.
To illustrate the utility of business practices in the society at large while helping students see beyond the cliché that “the business of business is business”; explore the relationship of management principles to nonbusiness goals, and the responsibilities and challenges that go with using them to achieve those goals; introduce students to the elements of the MIT Sloan 4 Capabilities Leadership Framework and the concept of a change signature; and demonstrate different leadership styles in action when juxtaposed with the A and B cases.
