MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative

Leading collaborative, rigorous and unbiased research

Our faculty conduct research in areas such as healthcare analytics, operations, and incentives, collaborating with industry partners to produce work that has practical application and measurable impact. We bring together industry leaders, students, alumni, and faculty experts through in-depth workshops and conferences that drive action on the most pressing issues in healthcare.
We also serve as a central hub for students interested in exploring healthcare careers through applied learning, clubs, and research groups across MIT.
At the MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative, we believe our unique approach has the power to improve lives by creating a more sustainable, equitable health system.

Our Mission

HSI's mission is to improve health by discovering transformative and sustainable innovations through research and education with leaders in the field. Work with us!

The HSI Approach

  • We Collaborate with Industry Leaders

When it comes to discovering new ideas that fuel innovation, there's strength in numbers, and power in multiple perspectives. We are a unifying force in healthcare, bringing together world-class researchers, students, and industry leaders to share ideas and learn from one another. Our workshops and conferences, as well as projects in the field, yield productive collaborations in every corner of the healthcare space.  From large-scale field testing of new ideas to in-depth qualitative understanding of how change happens within health systems, our work is grounded in theory but always with an eye on creating real-world impact.

  • We Conduct Rigorous, Actionable Research

We believe that rigorous research is a fundamental part of discovering, implementing, and scaling innovations that can transform today’s health system. Our faculty have deep expertise in operations management, organizational behavior, and economics & finance that provide multiple lenses to tackle complex problems in healthcare delivery.  We're using this broad, interconnected expertise to lead projects with measurable impact at a systems level, in areas such as prevention, financing, new delivery models, and health analytics.

  • We Are a Passionate and Unbiased Partner

At HSI, we are a deeply committed — and uncompromisingly neutral — partner dedicated to discovering and implementing solutions that improve healthcare delivery and management.  The discourse around improving today’s health system is complex. Finding lasting, practical solutions demands a measured, unbiased and open approach along with partnerships that promote collaborative thinking and positive momentum. We take seriously the role of honest broker when testing ideas and broadcasting findings to scale their impact.
