Zen Chu is Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Innovation at the MIT Sloan School of Management and Entrepreneur-In-Residence for the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship.
Zen believes that engineers will create the data, systems and products to help medicine scale and serve more patients with higher quality and lower cost. He specializes in building early-stage medical device and healthcare information technology companies and has served as founding CEO of three healthcare companies [3D-Matrix Ltd, Clinical Future, and EviPath]. He invests and serves on boards of a few public and private companies through Accelerated Medical Ventures.
Alongside MIT professors Shuguang Zhang, Alex Rich, Alan Grodzinsky, and Bob Langer, Zen co-founded and served as CEO for 3D-Matrix Medical Inc., a venture-backed MIT regenerative medicine company with a successful IPO in 2011. 3D-Matrix has wound-healing and drug-delivery products on the market outside of the US and multiple human clinical trials in process. Zen has managed and led new ventures for Harvard Medical School, Wyss Institute, NetVentures and Hewlett-Packard, where he founded the HPGarage new ventures group in Silicon Valley in 1997.
As Entrepreneur-In-Residence at MIT, Zen founded and mentors the H@ckingMedicine program, channeling MIT's efforts to impact healthcare around the world. He has served as judge and mentor for MIT's $100K Business Plan Competition and created Innovation Grand Rounds, courses to teach physicians and health professionals to invent high impact clinical innovations, in partnership with CIMIT (Center for Integration of Medicine & Integrative Technology), Mass General Hospital, Brigham & Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He's married to a software entrepreneur and they are raising three aspiring inventors.
Zen earned a BS in biomedical/electrical engineering from Southern Mehodist University and an MBA from Yale University.
