Augmented Reality Summit at MIT Media Lab brings the world’s AR pioneers together on the AR frontier

ARAugmented reality (AR)—a cousin to virtual technology—is quickly making itself indispensable in fields like medicine, architecture, industrial design, and entertainment, especially gaming. For those interested in leveraging the possibilities of AR, MIT’s annual Augmented Reality Summit is the center of the known universe.

AR in Action takes place at the MIT Media Lab January 17 and 18, 2017. The summit convenes the top minds in the augmented reality ecosystem, a diverse group of renowned thought leaders, visionaries, Fortune 100 executives, futurists, technologists, and AR practitioners, including Ethernet inventor Bob Metcalf and personal computer pioneer Alan Kay. Together, they will explore the challenges and opportunities that face inventors, integrators, investors, and other innovators working to bring the benefits of AR to the world.

What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, layering unreal imagery upon a real landscape or surface in real time. For example, the AR makeup mirror that allows consumers to try on different kinds of eye shadow without ever touching their faces. Although often lumped together with virtual reality, augmented reality is actually a very different experience. Whereas VR creates an entirely artificial environment, AR uses the existing environment as a backdrop and overlays new information on top of it.

Students at the MIT Media Lab have developed a wearable computing system called SixthSense that turns any surface into an interactive display screen. The wearer can access digital gadgets virtually, projecting a keyboard onto his or her hand, for example, to make a phone call. The work of Pranav Mistry in the Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces Group, the research is aimed at creating a new digital sixth sense for humans.

AR in Action will provide unprecedented opportunities for learning and networking with the greatest minds in AR and adjacent fields. Participants will be able to see, touch, and hear about AR research and other next-generation technologies, forge connections with speakers and participants working at the forefront of augmented reality, and help tackle current and future obstacles facing the widespread adoption of AR.
