Phil Cooper

Phil Cooper is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he teaches a graduate course on private equity and hedge funds.  He is also a member of the MIT Sloan School Finance Advisory Committee.

Phil has 30 years of experience in private equity as an entrepreneur, principal investor, fund investor, and secondary investor.  He is experienced in quantitative money management with a particular focus on risk control.   Phil currently serve on boards and investment committees, and as a special general partner of private equity funds.  He also advises investment firms and fiduciary Investors on alternative investments.  

Phil is cofounder, chairman and CEO of Digital Cognition Technologies, an MIT-spin out with new technology which can detect cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease at very early stages. He is a WAVE private equity fund special advisor, and serves on the advisory boards of RCP Advisors, a major private equity firm, and also RSTP, a tech-oriented private growth equity fund.

Phil conceived, founded, and led the Goldman Sachs Private Equity Group to over $11 billion in assets and international prominence.  He designed innovative risk control methods for private equity and secondary investing. While at Goldman Sachs, Phil served on the Goldman Sachs Asset Management Risk Committee, Operating Committee, and Goldman Sachs Technology Committee. He retired as a Goldman Sachs partner in 2004.

Phil is the former vice chairman of the Forsythe Medical Institute, and is the coholder of several US patents in investment technology.  His career has also included consumer product marketing.  He is a founder of multiple successful high tech companies.  

Phil is the president of Cambridge Concentus Orchestra, a board member of Boston Baroque Orchestra, and a member of the Children's Hospital Endowment Investment Committee.

He received his BS from Syracuse University and an MS in Management from MIT where he was an Alfred Sloan Fellow.
