Maryam Farboodi has won the 2019 Young Researcher Award from the SCOR-PSE Chair on Macroeconomic Risk (created in 2018 by the SCOR Corporate Foundation for Science and the Paris School of Economics), honoring outstanding research by a junior economist (within 10 years of PhD) in the field of macroeconomic risk. The award recognizes Farboodi for her “particularly stimulating and promising” work in financial intermediation and deliberate exposure to counterparty risk:  “innovative research, both in method and hypothesis, on the relationships between financial institutions and how these relationships may contribute to endogenous growth in systemic risk,” according to André Levy-Lang, chairman of the SCOR Foundation for Science. Farboodi presented her working paper entitled “Intermediation and Voluntary Exposure to Counterparty Risk” (October 2017) and received her award at a ceremony in July 2019 in Paris during the SCOR-PSE Chair annual conference.

Bill Aulet has won the 2019 Outstanding Contributions to Advancing Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education Award from the Deshpande Symposium on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education. Co-founded by the Deshpande Foundation and UMass Lowell, the Deshpande Symposium convenes participants from the worlds of academia, policy, and practice to discuss best practices in integrating entrepreneurship throughout their college and university communities.

The Awards Committee cited Aulet’s “dedication and commitment to fostering entrepreneurship across higher education” not just within MIT “but across the world”; his “fresh thinking”; his having helped launch “multiple programs at MIT including delta v, Beehive, Hacking Medicine, and several courses,” and his having “spread the entrepreneurial spirit internationally” with his “book, videos, and numerous presentations.”

Catherine Tucker has won the TechSIG-Lazaridis Prize for Best Paper in Innovation, Technology and Interactivity for 2019.  Along with co-author Anja Lambrecht, Tucker was honored for the paper, “Algorithmic Bias? An Empirical Study of Apparent Gender-Based Discrimination in the Display of STEM Career Ads,” published in Management Science in 2019. 

Swati Gupta received the NSF Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Award in 2019. The CRII Award is a junior faculty award, and Gupta won it while she was an assistant professor at the Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Peter Weill will receive the 2019 ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) Chair’s Award, an ISACA Global Achievement Award which is presented at the discretion of the ISACA Chair. This award is among ISACA’s highest honors, recognizing exemplary and longstanding contributions and exceptional impact on ISACA and/or the business technology profession.  

Kara Blackburn and Andrew Lo were each awarded the 2019 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established to honor educational innovation and excellence. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the School. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT.

Danielle Li has won the 2019 American Economic Journal Best Paper Award for AEJ: Applied Economics.  Li’s winning paper, “Expertise versus Bias in Evaluation: Evidence from the NIH” (AEJ: Applied Economics, 9 (2), April 2017, pp. 60-92), was also featured in the 2017 American Economic Association Research Highlight, “How Can We Make Sure the Best Medical Science Gets Funded?”

Hui Chen has won the 2019 North America Arthur Warga Award for Best Paper in Fixed Income—from the Society of Financial Studies— for his paper  "Pledgeability and Asset Prices: Evidence from the Chinese Corporate Bond Markets."  The paper's co-authors are Zhuo Chen, Zhiguo He, Jinyu Liu, and Rengming Xie. Two Arthur Warga Awards are presented every year year.

Ezra Zuckerman Sivan was named a winner of the 2019 Cooley-Mead Prize for best article, Social Psychology section of the American Sociological Association, for his paper “The Authentic Appeal of the Lying Demagogue: Proclaiming the Deeper Truth about Political Illegitimacy." The paper's co-authors are Oliver Hahl and Minjae Kim.

Yasheng Huang's book Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics: Entrepreneurship and the State was cited by The Economist as one of the best books of 2008 and a pick of the pile in economics and business.
