Food Supply Chain Analytics and Sensing Initiative

Wholesale Market Management

Wholesale markets (WSM) are a key consolidation point for the food supply chain in China. They provide opportunities to access and monitor the quality and safety of over 70-80% of food products in circulation. Meanwhile, the structural deficiencies at WSM create significant risks for food safety and zoonotic disease transmission. We are using supply chain analytics and big data integration to manage the risk drivers for food safety issues in wholesale markets. Currently, a pilot study for the development of digital management tools for WSM is ongoing with the support from collaborators in China, with the goal of enhancing wholesale markets’ roles in monitoring and regulating food safety. Our work will address structural deficiencies and other risk factors at WSMs to mitigate food and zoonotic disease risks.
