Housing Finance & Social Equity: Learning from the New Economy Project

Date: Tuesday, March 7, 2023
Time: 11:00 am
Location: Hybrid: Online & In-Person
Speaker: Deyanira Del Rio

Persistent racial and ethnic disparities in access to homeownership have created the need to examine whether—and how—to change aspects of the complex and rapidly changing US housing finance system. This challenge, and the foundational questions it raises, will be the focus of a series of public lectures given by practitioners and scholars in conjunction with a class on housing finance and equity offered by MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

Deyanira Del Rio, the second speaker in the series, is co-director of the New Economy Project, a non-profit that works with community groups to build a new economy that works for all, rooted in racial and social justice, cooperation, neighborhood equity, and ecological sustainability. At the New Economy Project, Del Rio works on community land trusts, public banking, and financial justice campaigns, and helped launch the organization’s community loan funds.

The public is also welcome to attend in person, no registration needed:
MIT Building 9 (105 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge), Room 354.

Co-Sponsors: MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University
