Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in the Global Economics and Management group at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he teaches in the Global Entrepreneurship Lab course as part of a team led by recent Nobel Prize winner Simon Johnson. His work supports MIT global entrepreneurship initiatives, international project-based learning, and the development of advanced entrepreneurial capabilities for students building and working in high impact ventures.
Prior to his current role at the institute, Kevin co-taught Building an Entrepreneurial Venture: Advanced Tools and Techniques, an intensive project-based course that served as the most advanced offering in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation track at MIT Sloan. He held this position for six years within the Technological Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Management group and was affiliated with the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. He advised more than 140 of MIT’s most promising entrepreneurs, providing strategic guidance that strengthened venture design, accelerated execution, and elevated the impact of student‑led innovation. In 2021, he received the Patrick J. McGovern Jr. ’59 Entrepreneurship Award for exceptional teaching. Furthermore, Kevin helped student teams raise more than $75 million and earn several placements in top accelerators such as Y Combinator.
A serial entrepreneur and technologist, Kevin is the founder and CEO of Synavize, an AI‑native company advancing the frontier of scientific superintelligence, and the founder and chairman of Johnson Media Inc., an award‑winning marketing and communications firm whose clients and partners have included Porsche, Chase, Microsoft, and The Coca‑Cola Company. As a thought leader in entrepreneurship and innovation, he contributed to the development of a Harvard Business School case study and is the bestselling author of The Entrepreneur Mind: 100 Essential Beliefs, Characteristics, and Habits of Elite Entrepreneurs, a book that has shaped how founders and educators understand the mindset required for entrepreneurial success. Selling more than half a million copies worldwide and earning honors such as the Axion Business Book Award and the Grand Prize Eric Hoffer Award, the book has become a widely used resource for emerging entrepreneurs, accelerators, and university programs.
In 2015, Kevin was invited to the White House for a special event on entrepreneurship with President Obama and prominent founders, including Mark Cuban (Broadcast.com), Steve Case (AOL), Brian Chesky (Airbnb), and Rich Barton (Expedia, Zillow, and Glassdoor). The event convened approximately one hundred emerging entrepreneurs from across the United States and around the world to recognize their achievements, encourage innovative solutions to global challenges, and highlight the administration’s commitment to supporting young entrepreneurs.
Kevin began his entrepreneurial journey in college when he founded a company that created one of the first online content management systems, called OmniPublisher, which he later sold to a publishing company. Before founding his companies, he engineered web applications and produced software for leading organizations, serving as a developer for IBM, CNN, and Accenture.
At Synavize, Kevin leads the development of scientific superintelligence systems designed to understand, interpret, and commercialize complex scientific data at scale. His work centers on product vision, scientific intelligence strategy, and partnerships across industry, academia, and government. Synavize builds advanced AI models that reveal actionable pathways within scientific datasets, enabling organizations to unlock hidden value inside high dimensional research, accelerate discovery, and bring innovation to market with greater precision. These capabilities are essential not only for solving major challenges on Earth but also for advancing humanity’s long-term ambitions in interplanetary travel and habitation.
Before founding Synavize, Kevin spent more than two decades as CEO of Johnson Media Inc., scaling the firm from a boutique consultancy into a nationally recognized marketing and communications company serving premier Fortune 100 brands. He led cross‑functional teams across multiple markets, oversaw a portfolio of campaigns that reached more than 50 million consumers worldwide and strengthened brand performance, directed multimillion‑dollar client engagements, and secured a landmark $40 million project that significantly expanded the firm’s national footprint. Under his leadership, Johnson Media delivered sustained double digit growth, expanded into new verticals, launched award‑winning digital platforms and technology products, and built strategic partnerships that strengthened client acquisition, retention, and brand performance. His entrepreneurial approach and commitment to innovation helped the firm earn Communicator Awards, Telly Awards, Davey Awards, and an AMY Award, reflecting its excellence in creative strategy, digital execution, and integrated marketing.
Kevin’s work as an entrepreneur across technology, media, and artificial intelligence has been featured on CNN, ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS, Oprah Radio, and in The New York Times, Fast Company, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal, establishing him as a recognized voice in entrepreneurship and innovation. He has delivered keynote talks and executive sessions on entrepreneurship, innovation, and emerging technologies for global audiences across industry, academia, and government, including international engagements throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In addition to his work at MIT Sloan, he has taught internationally as a visiting fellow and instructor at the Universidad Anáhuac in Yucatán, Mexico, and at the University of the West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados, further extending his global reach and influence.
Kevin’s governance experience spans public and global institutions, including a mayoral commission for one of the nation’s fastest growing cities, where he contributed to capital planning and long-term community strategy. His board service with the Casimiro Global Foundation and the Atlanta Business League included leadership in fundraising, membership growth, and capital campaigns, complemented by youth entrepreneurship and mentorship work through InspireDR and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. These roles reflect his commitment to mission-driven leadership and to strengthening communities through entrepreneurship and innovation.
Kevin is a graduate of Morehouse College, where he studied computer science and Spanish as a NASA scholar, earning honors before completing his MBA at MIT Sloan as a leadership fellow. He remains committed to advancing scientific intelligence, global entrepreneurship, and the development of innovation ecosystems that shape the future of technology and society.
