Financing Your MBA

Your acceptance to MIT Sloan is based on a needs-blind admissions process. After you are admitted to the MIT Sloan MBA program, you will have access to detailed information about the financial aid process. The process is slightly different depending on whether you are an international student, a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident. After acceptance, each incoming student begins the three-tiered financial aid process:

  1. Incoming students are automatically considered for fellowships and scholarships awarded by MIT Sloan and other MIT departments or related organizations. For incoming students, these awards are granted after a review process that is independent of your acceptance. Admitted applicants may be eligible for and considered for a variety of fellowships that require separate applications.
  2. Students may also apply for additional sources of financial assistance administered by external foundations and organizations. The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) offers resources to help find these opportunities on their website. If you are awarded an external (non-MIT) fellowship or scholarship, please submit the OGE Fellowship Intake Form. This form is term-specific. If you have questions, please reach out to grad-fellowships@mit.edu. Once admitted, you may also contact the Student Funding office at Sloan for a list of external/non-Sloan awards specific to business school students.
  3. Students establish eligibility for federal and private loans in collaboration with MIT Student Financial Services by submitting the Graduate Information Finance Form (all students) and the FAFSA (domestic students only). If you are interested in private loans, an application with the lender of your choice will also be required.

The Graduate Cost of Attendance is set by MIT Student Financial Services on an annual basis. This figure acts as a limit on the total amount of aid you are eligible to receive (including fellowships, scholarships, Teaching and Research Assistantships, etc, as well as federal and/or private student loans). If you are planning on paying for your time at MIT with aid, including loans, the difference between the “total” and the “tuition and fees” is the amount you will have available to fund all other living expenses.  For more information, please visit the MIT SFS Graduate Cost of Attendance page (ignore the tuition found on this page; Sloan tuition is published here).

In partnership with MIT’s Student Financial Services, we will guide you through the financial aid and billing process. Most MBA students rely on loans to help them finance their graduate education.  Please feel free to contact the Sloan Student Funding Office at studentfunding.mitsloan@mit.edu with any questions or concerns.

Loans

The first step for students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. MIT's FAFSA Title IV school code is 002178.

For all students (U.S. Citizens/Permanent residents and International Students), the first/next step is to submit the MIT Graduate Information Finance Form. All students with a Social Security Number need to add it to their student profile in WebSIS (under Biographic and Emergency Records). These 2-3 items will help the MIT Student Financial Services Student Loan Team determine your Cost of Attendance (the maximum amount you are allowed to borrow).

Once this information is received, MIT Student Financial Services will determine your loan eligibility and issue a financial aid award letter with your cost of attendance. You can wait for this letter, or you can initiate your student loan application(s) with the lender(s) of your choice, based on an estimate of your need by reviewing the published graduate cost of attendance and Sloan tuition. Domestic students or International Students with a domestic cosigner have an array of loan options, including federal unsubsidized loans. Options for International Students with no cosigner are more limited, but there are a few options for students in this situation.

Please contact Sloan Student Funding at studentfunding.mitsloan@mit.edu with any questions.
