Announcing Emilio Castilla’s New Book “The Meritocracy Paradox”

MIT Sloan Professor Emilio J. Castilla’s new book, The Meritocracy Paradox: Where Talent Management Strategies Go Wrong and How to Fix Them, will be published soon by Columbia University Press and is now available for preorder.

"This book draws on years of research—both my own and that of many scholars—to examine the promise and pitfalls of meritocratic ideals in today’s organizations and institutions, “ Castilla explained. “While meritocracy is often celebrated as a fair and efficient way to identify, advance, and reward talent, The Meritocracy Paradox reveals how personal biases and social barriers can quietly undermine the very values and outcomes that meritocratic systems are meant to uphold. In this book, I not only diagnose these hidden failures but also offer practical, research-backed frameworks to help organizations build fairer, more effective talent management systems—systems that truly recognize performance and potential while expanding opportunity for all.”

Castilla is the NTU Professor of Management and a Professor of Work and Organization Studies at MIT Sloan, where is he also co-director of the MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research (IWER)
