Silbey and Bailyn Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Susan S. Silbey and Lotte Bailyn are among six members of the MIT faculty to be elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025.

Silbey is Leon and Anne Goldberg Professor of Humanities and Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at MIT, as well as Professor of Behavioral and Policy Sciences at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where she is a member of the faculty of the MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research (IWER). Silbey's research explores the governance, regulatory and audit processes in complex organizations. 

Bailyn is the T Wilson (1953) Professor of Management, Emerita at MIT Sloan.  She studies the relationship between managerial practice and employees’ lives. Her research investigates how institutional and organizational processes intersect with people’s lives, with special emphasis on the dynamics of gender and diversity in business organizations and academia. Most recently, Bailyn, who is a faculty affiliate of the MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research (IWER), coauthored the 2025 book Retiring: Creating a Life That Works for You.

According to an MIT News article,  the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has, "since its founding in 1780, ...elected leading thinkers from each generation, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century, Maria Mitchell and Daniel Webster in the 19th century, and Toni Morrison and Albert Einstein in the 20th century. The current membership includes more than 250 Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners."
