General Information

Passport and Visa

You will need a valid passport and visa for attending the 2017 MIT Asia Conference in Accounting. We recommend that you apply for a tourist visa.

You may apply for a tourist (or a visitor’s) visa at a Chinese Embassy, or at the nearest consulate general. It may take a few days or weeks to get your visa. For detailed information, please contact your local Embassy or Consulate.

The conference recommends that you apply for a tourist visa (no longer than 15 days). The Chinese government requires an invitation letter for a tourist visa (as well as a business visa). The procedure to get a tourist (and business) invitation letter from Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) is the following:

Weather

Hangzhou is located in a humid subtropical climate, and thus has both plentiful rainfall and sunshine. The average is 17° C (63° F) in Hangzhou. However, weather in July can reach a high of 33° C (91° F) with lows around 25° C (77° F). Summer months tend to be particularly humid and can experience a great deal of rain. Summer clothing as well as proper rain gear are advised for time of the visit.

Electricity

Electricity is supplied at 220V, 50Hz in China.

Currency Exchange

In China, RMB is the only accepted currency. However, exchange centers can be found at airports, most hotels, and in large shopping centers. The current exchange rate is about US$ 1 = RMB 6.92. When exchanging money, please keep your receipt by which you can change any remaining RMB back to foreign currency when leaving China. Visa and Master Credit Cards are accepted in many department stores and hotels.

The Bank of China and most hotels will cash travelers’ checks issued by any major foreign bank or financial institution for which you must show a passport and pay a 0.75 percent commission. Travelers’ checks signed over to a third party cannot be cashed in China, but can be presented for collection through the Bank of China.

Please note: On-site registrations will be accepted on a space-available basis and must be paid via credit card.

Reconfirmation of Air Ticket

International travelers should reconfirm airline tickets 72 hours prior to departure. Travelers can do so by calling the airline carrier offices. Please note that these offices are typically not open on weekends.

Insurance

To protect yourself and your personal belongings while you are traveling in a foreign country, it is your responsibility to obtain adequate travel and health insurance before leaving your own country.

About Hangzhou

Hangzhou is the capital city of the Zhejiang Province; it is the most populous city in the province and fourth-largest city in China, with a population of over 21 million. It is located at the head of the Hangzhou Bay and is well known as the location of West Lake. Hangzhou’s economy has developed rapidly in the last twenty-five years and is an important manufacturing base for coastal China. Additionally, it is home to Alibaba, which is the world’s largest online B2B portal.

Traveling Within the Location

By City Bus and Subway

Bus transportation is efficient and convenient in Hangzhou. The buses operate from 5:00 am to 10:30 pm. Fares are ¥1-3 per person. The bus routes cover both the city and outskirts of the city.

The Hangzhou Metro has four lines which reach various parts of the city’s districts. Fares are ¥2-8.

By Taxi

Taxis in Hangzhou are relatively inexpensive. Fares are ¥11 for the first 3km, ¥2.5 for the following 4-10km, and then ¥3.75 per kilometer thereafter. Cab fare from the Xiaoshan Airport to the downtown area is approximately ¥100-150.
