Robert Pozen has been appointed as a trustee of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation, for a three-year term that started January 2, 2021. The IFRS Foundation Trustees are responsible for the governance, oversight, and strategy of the foundation and the International Accounting Standards Board, which sets IFRS Standards. Pozen’s appointment in one of the six Americas seats was approved by the IFRS Foundation Monitoring Board, a group of publicly accountable capital market authorities to whom the trustees are accountable. The appointment was announced in December.

MIT Sloan Professor of Finance Leonid Kogan won for his paper "Technological Innovation, Resource Allocation, and Growth" co-authored with D. Papanikolaou of Kellogg, A. Seru of Chicago Booth, and N. Stoffman of Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. The prize, which recognizes contributions to the field of quantitative asset management, provides a forum for new and cutting-edge research that connects theory and practice, in support of the continued development of the science of economics. The prize is named in honor of PanAgora's founder, the late Dr. Richard A. Crowell, a pioneer in the field of quantitative investing.

Kristin Forbes has been named an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the British economy (recognizing Forbes’ outstanding service contributions from 2014 to 2017 as an External Member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England). Appointments to The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire reward contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organizations, and public service. A CBE is among the most prestigious honors bestowed in the United Kingdom (after the highest, Knight or Dame). Awards given to non-UK citizens are “honorary.” Recipients of the award traditionally receive the insignia of the Order in London at Buckingham Palace, in an Investiture ceremony presided over by Queen Elizabeth II (or her designate, such as the Prince of Wales).

Ray Reagans (Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Management; Professor of Work and Organization Studies; and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and Basima Tewfik (Class of 1943 Career Development Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor of Work and Organization Studies) have each won a 2022 Teaching with Digital Technology Award from MIT for their innovative use of digital tools in their teaching. 

These student-nominated, student-judged awards recognize faculty and instructors who have effectively used digital technology to improve teaching and learning at MIT. This recognition also gives the MIT community the opportunity to learn from their innovative practices. The awards are co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. This year students submitted a total of 207 nominations, and 15 winners were selected.

Roberto Rigobon and Arathi Mehrotra (Managerial Communication) were named co-winners of the Sloan School Teacher of the Year at the MIT Sloan Excellence in Teaching Awards. Each year, students nominate instructors for these teaching awards and the final recipients are chosen based on the quantity and quality of their nominations.
 

Robert B. McKersie is the recipient of the 2008 Cushing/Gavin Award from the Boston Labor Guild. The Guild is a community labor management organization affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston. Each year it honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions as a neutral to our labor management community.

MIT Sloan Professor Robert C. Merton, along with Myron Scholes, won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1997 for a new method to determine the value of derivatives.  In collaboration with the late Fischer Black, they developed a pioneering formula for the valuation of stock options. The Black-Scholes-Merton options pricing model is a tenet of modern finance. Merton received his PhD in economics from MIT in 1970.

Otto Scharmer and Dimitris Bertsimas were each awarded the 2015 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established to honor educational innovation and excellence. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the School. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT.

Erin Scott and Scott Stern have each won the 2021 Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award from the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management, for their Entrepreneurial Strategy course developed with co-winner Joshua Gans (University of Toronto) and first launched at MIT Sloan and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
This annual award, sponsored by Yeshiva University, honors development and implementation of an innovation in entrepreneurship pedagogy. Evaluation of entrepreneurship courses is based on the innovativeness of the content and pedagogical process, demonstrated and potential impact and transferability, and the course’s relevance (to both students and entrepreneurial practice). The award committee recognized Entrepreneurial Strategy as “one of the very finest innovations in the area of entrepreneurship this year.”

Kerry Siani (Assistant Professor of Finance) has won an MIT Sloan School Outstanding Teacher Award for the 2022-2023 academic year. Mohammed Fazel Zarandi (Senior Lecturer in Operations Research/Statistics; Research Scientist) also won an Outstanding Teacher Award.  Each year, students nominate instructors for these teaching awards and the final recipients are chosen based on the quantity and quality of their nominations. Deputy Dean Michael Cusumano thanked the winners of this year’s teaching awards for “exemplifying the dedication to pedagogical excellence that is so central to our mission at MIT Sloan.”
