The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) has recently appointed four MIT Sloan faculty members as Faculty Research Fellows, including Christian Catalini, who has been appointed a fellow in the Productivity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship program. Namrata Kala, Christopher Palmer, and Claudia Steinwender were also appointed as fellows. The NBER is the nation’s leading nonprofit economic research organization, whose affiliates have included 27 Nobel Prize winners and 13 past chairs of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. While the NBER remains impartial and does not make public policy recommendations, NBER research findings are disseminated among academics, public policy makers, and business professionals, bringing critical information to many important public policy debates.

Speakers for this annual lecture, which was named in honor of a former dean, are chosen based on excellence and relevance of their work to a wide range of fields in the school. Through a competitive process their faculty identifies a leading scholar whose work is both highly impactful but also attractive to the broad set of interests among management faculty members. JoAnne Yates will give her lecture at McGill on April 18 in Montreal.

Don Lessard is one of three MIT faculty members awarded "Class of 1960 Fellows" support. Other faculty recipients are Vladimir Bulovic from Electrical Engineering and Washington Taylor from Physics. Taken together, the Class of 1960 funds will be focused on developing the core of the evolving energy curriculum at MIT.

Alan White was recognized as the architect of Sloan's China Management Education Project, which has contributed greatly to the development of Fudan's IMBA program (and which has been an anchor of Sloan's international educational programs).

Andrew Lo, Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor, is one of the 198 new members elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Members of the Academy include some of the world’s most accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, artists, and civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders.

Tom Kochan has been elected to the National Academy of Arbitrators, whose members are chosen by involved parties to hear and decide labor and employment arbitration cases in private industry, the public sector, and non-profits in both the United States and Canada.

Jared Curhan (with his MIT Sloan doctoral student/co-author Ashley Brown) received the "Outstanding Theoretical Paper" award from the International Association for Conflict Management (IACM) at its 23rd Annual Conference held in Boston in late June. The winning paper, entitled "The other edge of the sword: Parallel and divergent effects on objective and subjective value in negotiation," will appear in the forthcoming Handbook of Positive Organizational Scholarship (Oxford University Press).

Katherine Kellogg is the recipient of the first annual Best Published Paper Award from the Organization and Management Theory (OMT) division of the Academy of Management. Kate's winning paper, "Operating Room: Relational Spaces and Microinstitutional Change in Surgery," appeared in the November 2009 issue of the American Journal of Sociology.

Tom Kochan has been awarded a Doctor of Science in Economics honorary degree by the University of Sydney. This highest form of honor and recognition bestowed by the institution is given in recognition of Tom's "distinguished achievements throughout [his] professional life".

Erik Brynjolfsson, postdoctoral associate Frank MacCrory, and research scientist George Westerman, as well as co-author Yousef Alhammadi of the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, have won the 2014 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) Award for Best Conference Paper. Their winning paper is entitled, “Racing With and Against the Machine: Changes in Occupational Skill Composition in an Era of Rapid Technological Advance.”
