Bill Aulet was named the 2021 USASBE (United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship) Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year. This award recognizes distinguished leadership over a number of years within the field of entrepreneurship education, with winners having contributed substantive advancements to the way in which scholars think about and approach entrepreneurship teaching and learning.

The USABE tweet announcing Aulet’s award included: “He's changing the way entrepreneurship is understood, taught & practiced in the world.” Julienne Shields, USABE CEO, explains that Aulet is “unique … not only a beacon of inspiration for his own students, but also a luminary for his peers teaching and pushing educators to approach their classes and coursework with innovation and passion ... one of the most impactful thought-leaders in entrepreneurship education …”

Jim Utterback and Ed Roberts have both been elected Fellows of the Portland International Center for Management of Engineering and Technology (PICMET), which provides an annual international platform for academics, industry professionals, and government representatives to exchange new knowledge in the management of engineering and technology. Roberts and Utterback received two of the 11 PICMET Fellow Awards given this year to recognize outstanding contributions to the development and growth of this discipline.  

The many nominees were evaluated in technology management research, education, and other aspects of technology management leadership by a global panel of judges assessing worldwide impact on technology management and innovation. Roberts and Utterback, who have been MIT faculty members since 1961 and 1979 respectively, were both cited as “influential scholars throughout the world” in these fields.

 

Jim Utterback is the recipient of a 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Industrial Engineering & Management Sciences (IEMS) at Northwestern University, in recognition of his accomplishments and distinguished career contributions to the field of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Adrien Verdelhan, Nikolaos Trichakis, Andrew Lo, Miro Kazakoff, Joseph Doyle, Kristin Forbes, Arathi Mehrotra, and Sean Willems have each won a 2021 Teaching with Digital Technology Award from MIT for their work teaching on campus and/or remotely. These student-nominated awards recognize faculty and instructors who have used digital technology to improve teaching and learning for MIT students. This recognition also gives the MIT community the opportunity to learn from their innovative practices.

The awards are co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. This year students submitted a total of 230 nominations for 104 faculty and instructors, and 23 winners (35% from MIT Sloan) were selected by Dean for Digital Learning Krishna Rajagopal and Vice Chancellor Ian Waitz, in partnership with a panel of MIT students.  

Adrien Verdelhan has won the 2018 Amundi Pioneer Prize (formerly named the Amundi Smith Breeden Prize)—First Prize—for the best paper in any area other than corporate finance published in The Journal of Finance, which is the official publication of The American Finance Association and one of the most widely cited academic journals in finance as well as in economics.  Verdelhan’s winning paper, co-authored with Wenxin Du (Chicago Booth) and Alexander Tepper (Federal Reserve Bank of New York), is entitled, “Deviations from Covered Interest Rate Parity” (The Journal of Finance, 73(3):915-957, June 2018).

Adrien Verdelhan and Arnie Barnett were each awarded the 2016 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established to honor educational innovation and excellence. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the School. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT.

Vivek Farias and Tavneet Suri have each received approval from the MIT Research Support Committee for $50,000 of funding from the Solomon Buchsbaum Research Fund. This fund's purpose is "to launch new research initiatives that cut across disciplinary lines" in "support of innovative ideas advanced primarily by young faculty."

Vivek Farias has received the 2016  Best OM Paper in Management Science Award from the MSOM (Manufacturing and Service Operations Management) Society of INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences). Vivek was honored for his 2013 paper (co-authored with Srikanth Jagabathula of NYU Stern and Devavrat Shah of MIT EECS) entitled, “A Nonparametric Approach to Modeling Choice with Limited Data.”

Vivek Farias has won the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences Revenue Management and Pricing section prize, which recognizes the “best contribution to the science of pricing and revenue management published in English.” Farias was honored for his 2013 Management Science paper (co-authored with Srikanth Jagabathula of NYU Stern and Devavrat Shah of MIT EECS), “A Nonparametric Approach to Modeling Choice with Limited Data.”

International Association of Management of Technology (IAMOT) has recognized Ed Roberts, David Sarnoff Professor of the Management of Technology, and Eric von Hippel, Professor of Management of Innovation, as two of the top 50 authors of technology and innovation management over the last 5 years. This exceptional achievement places Roberts and von Hippel within the top 1% of all researchers in the field.
