Michael Cusumano has been named one of the top 50 2009 Agenda Setters in Information Technology by silicon.com "for altering the way the business cycle of tech firms is viewed."

Michael Cusumano has received an MIT-Balliol College Exchange Fellowship to spend a semester at Oxford University, which he plans to do next spring. At that time, he will also deliver the 2009 Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies, which are hosted by the Said Business School and will be published as a book, on the theme "In Search of Best Practice: Enduring Ideas in the History of Technology Strategy and Innovation."

Michael Cusumano's 2003 article in IEEE Software, "Software Development Worldwide: The State of the Practice," co-authored with Alan MacCormack, Chris Kemerer, and Bill Crandall, was selected by IEEE Software's editorial and advisory boards as one of its 25th-Anniversary Top Picks for full-length, peer-reviewed articles. Thirty-five articles were selected in total, and seven others, including "Software Development Worldwide," were nominated for follow-up reports.

Mike Whinston has won the 2016 Frisch Medal for his 2015 paper (co-authored with Ben Handel, UC Berkeley, and Igal Hendel, Northwestern), “Equilibria in Health Exchanges: Adverse Selection Versus Reclassification Risk.” The Frisch Medal, given every two years by the Econometric Society, recognizes the best applied paper(empirical or theoretical) published in Econometrica during the past five years.

Mike Whinston has received the Industrial Organization Society Distinguished Fellow Award, which is given annually in recognition of excellence in research, education, and leadership in the field of Industrial Organization.

Mike Whinston has won the 2014 Robert F. Lanzillotti Prize for Best Paper in Antitrust Economics sponsored by the Industrial Organization Society. The winning paper, “Internal Vs. External Growth in Industries with Scale Economies: A Computational Model of Optimal Merger Policy,” is co-authored with Ben Mermelstein, a PhD student at Northwestern; Volker Nocke of Mannheim University; and Mark Satterthwaite of Northwestern.

Nikos Trichakis won second prize for the 2018 POMS (Production and Operations Management Society) HOCM (Humanitarian Operations & Crisis Management) Best Paper Award, for “Designing Response Supply Chain Against Bioattacks,” co-authored with David Simchi-Levi and Peter Yun Zhang (both at MIT).

Arathi Mehrotra, Miro Kazakoff, Andrew W. Lo, Joseph Doyle, Kristin Forbes, Nikolaos Trichakis, Adrien Verdelhan, and Sean Willems have each won a 2021 Teaching with Digital Technology Award from MIT for their work teaching on campus and/or remotely. These student-nominated awards recognize faculty and instructors who have used digital technology to improve teaching and learning for MIT students. This recognition also gives the MIT community the opportunity to learn from their innovative practices.

Mehrotra was cited for her classes Communication for Leaders taught in the fall of 2020, and Communicating with Data, taught in the spring of 2021. One student nominator commented, "Arathi made an end of semester video with our best moments from each presentation, which was such a nice use of the video content and made the most of our virtual situation!"

The awards are co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. 
This year students submitted a total of 230 nominations for 104 faculty and instructors, 
and 23 winners (35% from MIT Sloan) were selected by Dean for Digital Learning Krishna Rajagopal and Vice Chancellor Ian Waitz, in partnership with a panel of MIT students. 

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) has recently appointed four MIT Sloan faculty members as Faculty Research Fellows, including Namrata Kala, who has been appointed a fellow in the Development Economics program. Christian Catalini, Christopher Palmer, and Claudia Steinwender were also appointed as fellows. The NBER is the nation’s leading nonprofit economic research organization, whose affiliates have included 27 Nobel Prize winners and 13 past chairs of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. While the NBER remains impartial and does not make public policy recommendations, NBER research findings are disseminated among academics, public policy makers, and business professionals, bringing critical information to many important public policy debates.
