Bob Pindyck, along with Deborah Ancona, was awarded the 2018 Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established to honor educational innovation and excellence. The Jamieson Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is the most prestigious teaching prize offered by the School. The award was established in 2006 and is awarded each year to two MIT Sloan faculty members, as well as two electrical engineering and computer science faculty members, for their contributions to educational excellence at MIT.

Andrew W. Lo is the winner of the 2018 Pinnacle Achievement Award from CME Group and BarclayHedge. This is the highest recognition of outstanding achievement among the Managed Futures Pinnacle Awards honoring top managed futures industry leaders. Eric von Hippel has won the National Medal of Science from the Government of Portugal. This medal is the highest distinction the Portuguese Government awards to scientists and is intended “to reward national or foreign individuals who, for their high professional and duty-making qualities, have been distinguished by valuable and exceptional contributions to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal.”  The four awardees were some of the founding members of the Patient Innovation Advisory Board. von Hippel’s award citation notes: “He is best known for developing the concept of user innovation, that end-users are responsible for a large amount of innovation, which motivated the work developed at Patient Innovation. This medal recognizes his continuous support to the Patient Innovation project from the very beginning.”

The Portuguese Government announced the winners November 3, 2020 in a ceremony in Lisbon, and this recently von Hippel gave a talk online at CIÊNCIA 2020 (National Science Summit 2020).  (An introduction of von Hippel begins at 7:38:58, and his talk (about 24.5 minutes) begins at 7:45:38.)

Robert Pozen has been appointed as a trustee of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation, for a three-year term that started January 2, 2021. The IFRS Foundation Trustees are responsible for the governance, oversight, and strategy of the foundation and the International Accounting Standards Board, which sets IFRS Standards. Pozen’s appointment in one of the six Americas seats was approved by the IFRS Foundation Monitoring Board, a group of publicly accountable capital market authorities to whom the trustees are accountable. The appointment was announced in December.

MIT Sloan Professor Antoinette Schoar has been named one of the top 10 academics influencing the institutional investment industry by aiCIO magazine. Schoar joins a group of academics who have significantly aided pensions, endowments, foundations, and sovereign wealth funds, as well as institutional investors who are fulfilling their obligations to stakeholders.

MIT Sloan Professor of Finance Leonid Kogan won for his paper "Technological Innovation, Resource Allocation, and Growth" co-authored with D. Papanikolaou of Kellogg, A. Seru of Chicago Booth, and N. Stoffman of Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. The prize, which recognizes contributions to the field of quantitative asset management, provides a forum for new and cutting-edge research that connects theory and practice, in support of the continued development of the science of economics. The prize is named in honor of PanAgora's founder, the late Dr. Richard A. Crowell, a pioneer in the field of quantitative investing.

Kristin Forbes has been named an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the British economy (recognizing Forbes’ outstanding service contributions from 2014 to 2017 as an External Member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England). Appointments to The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire reward contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organizations, and public service. A CBE is among the most prestigious honors bestowed in the United Kingdom (after the highest, Knight or Dame). Awards given to non-UK citizens are “honorary.” Recipients of the award traditionally receive the insignia of the Order in London at Buckingham Palace, in an Investiture ceremony presided over by Queen Elizabeth II (or her designate, such as the Prince of Wales).

Ray Reagans (Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Management; Professor of Work and Organization Studies; and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and Basima Tewfik (Class of 1943 Career Development Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor of Work and Organization Studies) have each won a 2022 Teaching with Digital Technology Award from MIT for their innovative use of digital tools in their teaching. 

These student-nominated, student-judged awards recognize faculty and instructors who have effectively used digital technology to improve teaching and learning at MIT. This recognition also gives the MIT community the opportunity to learn from their innovative practices. The awards are co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. This year students submitted a total of 207 nominations, and 15 winners were selected.

Retsef Levi and his co-authors Mahesh Nagarajan from UBC and Ganesh Janakiraman from NYU Stern, were chosen to receive the INFORMS Optimization Society Young Researcher Prize at the INFORMS annual conference in October for their paper entitled "A 2-Approximation Algorithm for Stochastic Inventory Control Models with Lost Sales" that appeared in Mathematics of Operations Research.

Retsef Levi has received a National Science Foundation Career Grant for his proposal: "New Algorithmic Approaches to Computationally Challenging Stochastic Supply Chain and Revenue Management Models." This award is among the most highly-regarded distinctions in government-funded scientific organizations.
