Get to know MIT Sloan’s eight new faculty members

One examines how multinational corporations work with manufacturers in the developing world. Another is an economist who served as senior policy advisor to the U.K.’s secretary of health. MIT Sloan this year welcomes eight new faculty members in fields ranging from global economics to operations management.

Greg Distelhorst

Assistant Professor of Global Economics and Management

Comes from: Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, where he was an associate professor of international business and an associate member of the department of politics and international relations. He received his PhD in political science from MIT in 2013.

Research: Explores the social impact of multinational business, focusing on how multinationals engage with labor-intensive manufacturers in the developing world.

Colin Fogarty

Assistant Professor of Operations Research and Statistics

Comes from: The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his PhD in statistics earlier this year.

Research: Examines the design and analysis of observational studies. Investigates whether existing qualitative advice from quasi-experimentalists on how to conduct a “good” observational study can produce demonstrable quantitative improvements in the resulting inference.

Jacquelyn Gillette

Assistant Professor of Accounting

Comes from: Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, where she received her PhD in accounting earlier this year.

Research: Focuses on the mechanisms that shape the information environment and the pricing of securities in public debt markets, with concentration on the role of accounting and information intermediaries in the corporate bond market.

Daniel Greenwald

Assistant Professor of Finance

Comes from: New York University, where he received his PhD in economics earlier this year.

Research: Studies connections between financial markets and the macroeconomy, including how institutional features of mortgage markets can amplify the effects of interest rate movements on debt, house prices, and economic activity.

 Jónas Jónasson

Assistant Professor of Operations Management

Comes from: London Business School, where he received his PhD in management science and operations earlier this year.

Research: Focuses on improving health care delivery in settings with limited resources. Develops models showing the impact of health care delivery programs on individual disease progression and public health outcomes.

David Thesmar

Professor of Finance

Comes from: HEC Paris, where he was a professor of finance.

Research: Has studied the impact of financing constraints on the real economy. Investigates risk management and systemic risk in banking, as well as the impact of firm organization and non-rational decision making on corporate strategies.

 Nikos Trichakis

Assistant Professor of Operations Management

Comes from: Harvard Business School, where he was an assistant professor of business administration. He received his PhD in operations research from MIT Sloan in 2011.

Research: Studies optimization under uncertainty, and data-driven optimization and analytics, with application in health care, supply chain management, and finance.

John Van Reenen

Professor of Applied Economics

Comes from: The London School of Economics, where he was a professor of economics and the director of the Centre for Economic Performance.

Research: Has published widely on the economics of innovation, labor markets, and productivity and has been a senior policy advisor to the U.K. Secretary of State for Health and for many international organizations.
